8 Foods and Drinks for better sleep

This list focuses not only on sleep drinks but also on sleep foods. A surprise on the list was rice cakes. As usual this list is full of the standard suggestions such as milk and chamomile tea. My suggestion would be to add a downer drink such as miniChill or Dream Water.

Here are eight foods and drinks that help you sleep, naptime and/or nighttime:

1. Turkey – the classic nap food.
2. Rice cakes – a food with a high glycemic index eaten about four hours before bed can cause the perfect crash.
3. Milk - also has tryptophan, and is very soothing when warm.
4. Yogurt – dairy foods without a lot of protein are ideal.
5. Wine – don’t overdo it; one or two glasses is relaxing; more can disrupt your sleep patterns.
6. Bedtime Tea from Yogi Tea – this tea is serious business.
7. Chamomile tea – your grandmother’s version of the same thing.
8. Oatmeal – melatonin, people.

Drinks that promote sleep

This list below includes almost all hot or warm drinks. Sometimes these old standbys don’t cut it. When you have tried the warm milk or a hot tea but still cannot calm the mind and body for a goodnight’s sleep, perhaps a sleep drink or relaxation shot is what you need. New functional beverage drinks that promote relaxation and sleep are available, like miniChill or Dream Water.

Dream Water is an Instant Sleep Drink: Hours of sleep, No over sleeping, Zero sugar, Zero Calories.

Perhaps this is the drink that will finally promote better sleep for you. Don’t waste another restless night without trying a new drink to promote better sleep.

Here is the list:

Warm lovelies, sweet and fragrant, steaming up your glasses. Put these drinks in a mug and let their heat radiate through both your hands, through the front of your sweater. You do have the cup held to the level of your heart, don’t you? Aren’t you curling over it, catching the warmth with your whole body? Isn’t the blanket around your shoulders keeping it in?

You only need one cup. Sip and sip and let your head droop and your body drowse over it.

Hot tea. Classic. Measure out your choice of tea into an infuser ball, or get out a tea bag. Place in your mug and pour boiling water over. Steep five minutes while you are running a bath. Balance the cup on the edge of the tub, beside the faucet, if that edge is flat. Then get in the bath. No bubbles, just dual hot waters. Let your whole body open to the steam.

Hot milk. Surprisingly good, much more subtle than cocoa. Warm milk gently in a saucepan. Add 5 drops vanilla or almond extract. Heat through, stirring, until steaming. Get in bed, wrapped in multiple layers of flannel. Sit up against the headboard with a book you bought and let sit on the shelf for six months. Read until it drops from your fingers.

Hot cocoa. Sweet and thick. Warm milk as above; add appropriate cocoa powder or syrup. Melt a spoonful of cream into the mix. Sit and sip with someone you like, talking about nothing in particular, eating thin, crispy cookies that crumble or melt on your tongue.

Onion soup. A very light broth, savory. Sauté a finely chopped yellow onion in butter until translucent. Add boiling vegetable broth or water from the teapot. Season with salt, pepper, a dash of cayenne. Pour into mug; grate a mild parmesan over the top, if desired. Drink, with spoon for necessary assists, while watching horrible sitcoms or reruns of M*A*S*H.

Hot toddy. Good for sore throats. In your mug, mix a shot and a half of bourbon or whiskey with one teaspoon lemon juice, one teaspoon honey. Fill the remaining space with boiling water. Stir well to melt honey. Wrap up in your bathrobe and sit on the couch, insulated from every angle. Inhale this one before every sip.

Hot buttered rum. Almost too sweet. Mix a shot and a half of spiced rum with one teaspoon powdered or brown sugar. Fill with boiling water and top with one teaspoon butter, with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon to taste. Permutations abound.

Hot brandy. Strong but spectacular. Warm and pour into a little snifter. Close your eyes; take tiny sips. Let it coat you and roll almost invisible to the back of your tongue. You absorb this one gradually, gradually let your guard down, gradually let your muscles relax.

Stop thinking. Your shoulders fall. Lines smooth themselves out of your face.

This is a slow force like gravity.

Are relaxation drinks safe?

The question is often raised about relaxation shots and sleep drinks in regards to health risks. One relaxation drink maker has published some research.

Mini Chill is one relaxation shot that took the high road from day one, recruiting the expertise of Dr. Benjamin S. Weeks, a nutriceutical expert at Adelphi University and making sure that Mini Chill is the safest and most effective drink of it’s kind.

Dr. Weeks took these efforts one-step further. He conducted clinical trials of the drink, and had those findings published in a peer-reviewed manuscript.

The clinical trials, conducted on 60 healthy adults, found that 51 of them experienced increased relaxation and improved mental focus. This research was submitted to The Medical Science Monitor, whose international board of scientists and physicians signed off that the findings were accurate. These findings were then published in the December 2009 issue of the Medical Science Monitor.

While the debate continues over the safety and effectiveness of the anti-energy drink market Mini Chill is working to make sure it is well known they are safe and effective at increased relaxation and improved mental focus in those that drink these sleep and relaxation drinks.
